On Monday, September 24 the town of Cumberland was voting to pass a resolution to support the trail conversion. I gave my comments to the town at last night’s council meeting. I was trying to point out the reasons NOT to have the rails ripped up and a trail put in its place. Most of the council don’t get it. At least we were able to achieve a postponement on the vote to support the trail. We hope to have the council meet with abutting land owners soon.
It is clear that the majority of the Cumberland Town Council care nothing about abutting land owners. I give kudos to councilors Helene DiBartolomeo, Denise Thorsson, and Michael Edes; they are concerned about how the legitimacy of the rail-to-trail process, the shortsightedness of removing the rail line, and the decisions to not include abutting landowners in any discussions about the issue.
